An offsider for Melbourne plumbers

Melbourne is the only city in the country where a large part of the inner suburbs sits under live tram wire, and one of the few where the water authority changes depending on which side of town the job is. Neither is visible from an address, and both decide who you have to ring before you start.

yo drizzy is a set of AI agents for trade businesses. Tell Drizzy what needs doing and he books it, texts the crew, writes the quote and chases the invoice, what that looks like for plumbers.

What is different about plumbers in Melbourne

The part nobody puts on a page like this, because it takes longer than swapping a city name in. yo drizzy does not lodge any of it for you. Knowing it is on you, and knowing which job it attaches to is the bit software can actually help with.

The wholesaler owns the big pipe, the retailer owns yours

Melbourne Water is the wholesaler and holds the large mains, the main drains and the waterways. The three retailers hold the local network and the connection at the property. That two layer split is the thing people from interstate get wrong: the question is not "who is the water authority in Melbourne" but "which of the three, and is the asset I am next to actually theirs". Ringing the wrong one is a morning.

Lead free, since the first of May

From 1 May 2026, plumbing products containing copper alloy that come into contact with drinking water have to meet new lead free requirements. That is fittings, tapware and valves, the things that live in the back of the van for years. Stock bought before the change does not become compliant by sitting on a shelf, so the ute is worth a look before the next potable job rather than after somebody asks.

Working in Melbourne

Live wire over the street you are working in

Working on or around the tram network can need a permit from Yarra Trams, and in some cases an isolation of the overhead or the feeder cables underneath. High risk zones and no go zones around tram infrastructure have their own rules, and scaffolding is called out specifically: inside a no go zone the asset owner has to be contacted, and a spotter is not accepted as enough while scaffolding is going up or coming down. A ladder, a tipper tray and a boom all reach further than people expect.

And VIC, wherever in it you are standing

Seven hundred and fifty dollars, counting the tap you bought

A compliance certificate is required whenever the total value of the work passes $750, and that total counts materials, appliances, labour and GST, including materials somebody else supplied. It is also required at any value at all for a list of specific jobs: installing, relocating or replacing a Type A gas appliance, converting an appliance to another fuel, consumer gas piping, any below ground sanitary drain or its gullies, and cooling towers. Two clocks then: five days to get it to the customer, and five days to lodge it through VBA360.

Registered is not licensed, and only one of them can sign

Victoria splits plumbers in two. A registered plumber can do the work, but cannot issue a compliance certificate, they either work under a licensed plumber’s supervision or stay on jobs that do not need a certificate. Only the licensed plumber signs, and only for work they did themselves or supervised. Signing for work you neither did nor supervised is an offence and can leave both you and the customer outside the mandatory insurance. If your bloke on site is registered and you are the licence, that is a rostering problem as much as a paperwork one.

Questions Melbourne plumbers ask

Does yo drizzy know the Victoria rules?

It keeps your jobs, your dates and your money straight, which is what the paperwork runs on, but it is not a compliance product and does not lodge anything with a regulator for you. What is on this page about VIC and about Melbourne is sourced and dated below, so you can check any of it against the government page it came from.

I work across 7 council areas. Does that matter?

Not to yo drizzy, a job is an address, a day and who is on it. It matters to you, though: City of Melbourne, Yarra, Merri-bek and the rest each have their own forms and their own turnaround. What this helps with is remembering which job is waiting on which one, because that is the part people lose.
