An offsider for Melbourne carpenters

Melbourne is the only city in the country where a large part of the inner suburbs sits under live tram wire, and one of the few where the water authority changes depending on which side of town the job is. Neither is visible from an address, and both decide who you have to ring before you start.

yo drizzy is a set of AI agents for trade businesses. Tell Drizzy what needs doing and he books it, texts the crew, writes the quote and chases the invoice, what that looks like for carpenters.

What you would say, in Melbourne

second fix at the richmond cottage, three days from monday, me and sam Three days from Monday. Sam is texted.
matching skirting for fitzroy is a special order, put it on the job Logged against Fitzroy as materials. It comes off the margin.
how much did the laneway access cost us on that one? Fourteen hours over the quote across the two of you. It went backwards.

What is different about carpenters in Melbourne

The part nobody puts on a page like this, because it takes longer than swapping a city name in. yo drizzy does not lodge any of it for you. Knowing it is on you, and knowing which job it attaches to is the bit software can actually help with.

Single fronted, double fronted, and nothing standard

Melbourne’s inner north and west are Victorian and Edwardian cottages on narrow blocks, single fronted in Fitzroy and Richmond, weatherboard through Brunswick and Footscray. Studs are not at four fifty, the floor runs away toward the back, and the mouldings have to be matched rather than bought. In a Heritage Overlay you cannot quietly replace a streetfront detail with whatever the supplier stocks, which turns a half day into a special order and a wait.

A rear lane is the only way in, if there is one

The bluestone laneway behind the terrace is either the reason the job is possible or the reason it is not. Where there is no lane, the timber goes through the house. Where there is one, it is barely a van wide and somebody parks in it. Either way it is hours that a quote written off a plan does not have in it, and hours are the only thing you cannot get back on a fixed price.

Working in Melbourne

Three water companies, and the address decides

There is no single water authority here. Greater Western Water runs from Werribee through the west and north to the Macedon Ranges, covering Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley, Wyndham and Yarra among others. South East Water has the south east, Port Melbourne to Portsea and out to Pakenham, across nineteen council areas. Yarra Valley Water has much of the north and east. Melbourne Water sits above all three as the wholesaler. Which one you deal with is decided by the address and by nothing you can see from the street.

Live wire over the street you are working in

Working on or around the tram network can need a permit from Yarra Trams, and in some cases an isolation of the overhead or the feeder cables underneath. High risk zones and no go zones around tram infrastructure have their own rules, and scaffolding is called out specifically: inside a no go zone the asset owner has to be contacted, and a spotter is not accepted as enough while scaffolding is going up or coming down. A ladder, a tipper tray and a boom all reach further than people expect.

And VIC, wherever in it you are standing

A deck passes ten thousand before you have swung a hammer

Victoria puts the registration line at $10,000 of domestic building work, and the figure counts building materials and GST as well as labour. On a deck that is a couple of packs of hardwood and the framing, so a job that felt like a fortnight of your own time is registered work before you start. It is a threshold about the project, not about what you are charging.

The VBA is the BPC now

The Victorian Building Authority became the Building and Plumbing Commission, and from 1 July 2025 the same body took over the domestic building insurance policies that used to sit with VMIA. Nothing about the work changed. What changed is every bookmark, every form and every line in your paperwork that still names the old one.

Questions Melbourne carpenters ask

Does yo drizzy know the Victoria rules?

It keeps your jobs, your dates and your money straight, which is what the paperwork runs on, but it is not a compliance product and does not lodge anything with a regulator for you. What is on this page about VIC and about Melbourne is sourced and dated below, so you can check any of it against the government page it came from.

I work across 7 council areas. Does that matter?

Not to yo drizzy, a job is an address, a day and who is on it. It matters to you, though: City of Melbourne, Yarra, Merri-bek and the rest each have their own forms and their own turnaround. What this helps with is remembering which job is waiting on which one, because that is the part people lose.
