Electricians · Melbourne, VIC
An offsider for Melbourne electricians
Melbourne is the only city in the country where a large part of the inner suburbs sits under live tram wire, and one of the few where the water authority changes depending on which side of town the job is. Neither is visible from an address, and both decide who you have to ring before you start.
yo drizzy is a set of AI agents for trade businesses. Tell Drizzy what needs doing and he books it, texts the crew, writes the quote and chases the invoice, what that looks like for electricians.

What is different about electricians in Melbourne
The part nobody puts on a page like this, because it takes longer than swapping a city name in. yo drizzy does not lodge any of it for you. Knowing it is on you, and knowing which job it attaches to is the bit software can actually help with.
Traction overhead is not the distributor’s wire
Anywhere on a tram route you are working near an asset that belongs to the traction company rather than to your distribution business, and the permit and isolation come from a different organisation than the one you deal with for everything else. Energy Safe’s no go zone rules still apply on top: inside three metres of an overhead line you need the operator’s permission, and out to 6.4 metres you need a registered spotter. On a Brunswick shopfront both of those are live questions before the ladder comes off the roof rack.
Five distributors, and the metro is split between them
Victoria has five distribution businesses rather than one, and greater Melbourne alone is carved between several of them. Since a prescribed certificate has to go to the distribution business as well as to Energy Safe and the customer, which distributor holds the address is not trivia, it is one of the three places the paperwork has to land inside sixteen days.
Working in Melbourne
Three water companies, and the address decides
There is no single water authority here. Greater Western Water runs from Werribee through the west and north to the Macedon Ranges, covering Brimbank, Hobsons Bay, Maribyrnong, Melton, Moonee Valley, Wyndham and Yarra among others. South East Water has the south east, Port Melbourne to Portsea and out to Pakenham, across nineteen council areas. Yarra Valley Water has much of the north and east. Melbourne Water sits above all three as the wholesaler. Which one you deal with is decided by the address and by nothing you can see from the street.
And VIC, wherever in it you are standing
Prescribed work is somebody else’s inspection
Victoria does not let you self certify the big stuff. Ten categories of prescribed work, consumer mains, tenancy mains, hazardous areas, high voltage, generation including solar and battery, security electric fences, remote area power, medical patient areas, safety services and Part 1 solutions, must be inspected by a licensed electrical inspector who is not you. That is a third party to book, and booking them is part of the job rather than an afterthought.
Sixteen days, or one month, depending which it was
A prescribed certificate goes to the customer, the distribution business and Energy Safe Victoria within sixteen calendar days of finishing. A non prescribed one has a month. Two different clocks running off the same job, started by the day you finished, and the shorter one belongs to the work that also needed an inspector. Anybody coming from New South Wales is used to one deadline of seven days and will get this wrong at least once.
Questions Melbourne electricians ask
Does yo drizzy know the Victoria rules?
It keeps your jobs, your dates and your money straight, which is what the paperwork runs on, but it is not a compliance product and does not lodge anything with a regulator for you. What is on this page about VIC and about Melbourne is sourced and dated below, so you can check any of it against the government page it came from.
I work across 7 council areas. Does that matter?
Not to yo drizzy, a job is an address, a day and who is on it. It matters to you, though: City of Melbourne, Yarra, Merri-bek and the rest each have their own forms and their own turnaround. What this helps with is remembering which job is waiting on which one, because that is the part people lose.
